November 2024 Leakfix Newsletter: Streamlining Operations & FlamLINE Innovation
Owners Insights: 2024 Recap.
It has been raining a lot lately, and we’ve had very little time for reflection—some moments were good, others not so much. On the bright side, Leakfix has survived another year. 💪 On the downside, here’s a list of what we need to improve next year.

Figure 1 - Complain
1. Growth.
We’ve been busy working on our business and with our personal lives and haven't had enough resources and time to employ someone reliable to replace Pete. Perhaps we need to invest more in training and development of young people in 2025. The work itself can be quite unpleasant at times, and it can be challenging for young people, who are often somewhat detached from the outcomes of their efforts. To be fair, I think the general public largely underestimates the amount of skill required to successfully install sheet membranes, especially in the remedial space. Not only does it demand physical dexterity, but it also requires focus and problem-solving skills.
2. Contracting as a small specialty installer.
While we enjoy installing membranes, the time required to run the business has proven to be far greater than we initially anticipated. Admin tasks, contracts, insurance matters, and dealing with difficult people all pull us away from the hands-on work we love. Honestly, it sometimes makes us dream of becoming hot yoga teachers in Bali. To address this challenge, next year we plan to take the following steps:
- Starting 2025, we will no longer provide a supply & install model, with some minor exceptions, we will now only work with materials supplied (stored, managed and argued over) by Client.
- Starting 2025, we will install specialty products based only on flat rates. It is not commercially viable to manage larger projects, there are far too many variables, especially in remedial space.
- To improve our cash flow, starting 2025, we will only work on 7 days invoices issued weekly on Fridays, or at the end of the work day, depending on the size of engagement. We are very sorry, but if you cannot pay your invoices on time, we cannot afford to work with you, even if we like you...
- We will only sign contracts as per our terms and conditions which will be made available on our website. While we will try to be nice about it, please do not try to trick us into signing your contracts. Also we like small engagements, these are easier to manage, and often contracts are not required (check with your local government what rules apply).
3. We need more space
While it has worked for longer that I thought it could, we can no longer work out of my garage... I need storage, space and more tools. Does anyone know of nice small shops for rent on the Gold Coast? Let us know.

Waterproofing complex building structures often presents significant challenges, especially when managing expansion joints. These structural components, designed to accommodate movement, can easily become weak points in waterproofing systems. That’s why finding a durable, flexible, and reliable solution is essential for professionals in the industry. Recently, I had the privilege of learning about FlamLINE, an innovative joint tape from Soba Inter AG, during a meeting with Tomasz from Soba Inter on the Gold Coast.
What is FlamLINE?
FlamLINE is an advanced joint tape expertly designed to bridge expansion joints in bituminous membrane systems. Manufactured from high-quality elastomer, FlamLINE ensures impermeability at all joint zones, even in the most challenging conditions.
Key Features and Benefits
FlamLINE offers a range of benefits that make it a standout choice for waterproofing applications:
- Exceptional Flexibility
Its central expansion zone is designed to absorb multi-dimensional joint movements of up to 240 mm. - Enhanced Durability
FlamLINE is produced through vulcanization, eliminating weak points at connections. It maintains its flexibility even in extreme temperatures and offers excellent resistance to weathering and wear. - Chemical Resistance
Whether in chlorinated water environments like swimming pools or industrial settings, FlamLINE’s chemical resistance ensures it performs consistently without degradation. - Easy Installation
The reinforced adhesive flanges can be connected directly to bituminous sealants by scorching or adhered with epoxy resin or liquid plastics, depending on the application. - Versatility
Compatible with a variety of sealing systems, including PMMA and polyurea, FlamLINE adapts seamlessly to different project requirements.
Why FlamLINE Stands Out
Expansion joints are one of the most demanding aspects of waterproofing. Movement, temperature fluctuations, and environmental exposure can lead to leaks and long-term structural issues. FlamLINE’s innovative design, combining flexibility, durability, and chemical resistance, tackles these challenges head-on.
About Soba Inter AG
Soba Inter AG, the creators of FlamLINE, has been at the forefront of elastomer solutions since 1976. Based in Switzerland, the company is known for its commitment to quality, sustainability, and innovation. Tomasz shared insights into their rigorous standards, which are reflected in their ISO 9001 certification and market-driven approach to solving complex waterproofing challenges.
Conclusion
For anyone in the waterproofing industry, FlamLINE is more than just a product—it’s a solution to one of the toughest challenges we face: ensuring the impermeability of expansion joints. Its advanced features, ease of use, and proven performance make it an essential addition to any project.

P.S.
We also really liked the flexible pipe collars - we will be experimenting with this over the Christmas break.
