June 2024 Leakfix Newsletter: Introducing Imper Paralon & Tapered Insulation

Owner's Insights: In June, we focus on new products to the Australian market.

At Leakfix, we like to be the first to use products recently introduced to our market. When
Fatra Australia asked us to run their very first modified bitumen membrane contractor
training, we were very excited. We got even more excited when we learned that they will
now be importing Imper Paralon membranes to Australia.

The new range:

For now, the range of available products is as follows:

  • Sanded base sheet,
  • Dark gray cap sheet,
  • Antiroot sheet,
  • Perforated sheet for partially bonded system,
  • A good range of prefabricated TPE accessories and Calloni tools

User Experience

We worked with a few different configurations and liked both the base sheet and cap sheet
membrane. The base sheet is a typical sanded base sheet, similar to what's available from
Sika or Soprema. The cap sheet is especially nice for detailing work, being quite robust and
resistant to marking. We were pleasantly surprised by the prefabricated corners, despite
our initial skepticism 😂. Additionally, the Fatra Australia team is knowledgeable and a
pleasure to work with.

Expert Tip of the Month: Tapered Insulation - Simple solution to your ponding problem.

Introduction

Are you concerned with water ponding on the roof of your asset? Well, you should be if you
own a self-protected membrane roof (exposed roof). If water ponds over your exposed
roof membrane for more than 48 hours after rainfall, it can significantly accelerate the
aging of the membrane.

Problems with ponding water on modified bitumen roof:

  • Abrasion and Erosion: Standing water can lead to the accumulation of debris and sediment. As this debris moves with wind or foot traffic, it can cause abrasion, wearing down the bitumen surface.
  • Thermal Stress: Modified bitumen roofs are subjected to thermal cycles of heating and cooling. A permanent water puddle can exacerbate thermal stress because water heats up and cools down more slowly than the surrounding roofing material. This differential expansion and contraction can lead to stress on the membrane.

How to avoid or fix ponding?

Tapered roof insulation systems provide solutions for overcoming insufficient roof slopes, correcting slopes in the wrong direction, and addressing complex or limiting roof conditions that seem technically infeasible for typical single-slope roof profiles.

Tapered insulation schemes can be designed for both new projects as well as retrofits and repairs. They are generally easy and quick to install, unlike screeds or toppings, and can handle more loading than expected with an adequate overlay board.
