Owners Insights: Rolls are heavy and I’m getting old.

This month Leakfix is in Brisbane CBD and waterproofing the roof above the Australian HQ of Oracle, the makers of Aconex - software on which most of us have one too many logins...😅

I started to actively look for casual help after Pete left me for the comfort of a full time job 15 minutes down the road from his house. Pete was awesome, hard worker and reliable, hard to replace...💔

Young fella in his 20’s came on board this week, but only lasted until lunch time. I must say that careers in roofing and waterproofing are not exactly on top of young people's minds these days.

Yes, rolls of membrane are heavy, Yes it is not easy to be on your knees all day, It is outside and it can be quite unpleasant to do in the sun or in the cold... Also as a small business owner I really cannot afford for anyone to browse tik tok while we are working. Yes, if you work with me, you will break a sweat...

Expert Tip of the Month: Roof Sumps in low slope assemblies

A sump in waterproofing and low slope roofing systems is a depression or recessed area located around drainage points on a roof. In this instance, because the waterproofed area was located at podium level, we used a cementitious screed to create the fall and built a sump at the existing drainage point location. Given that we were limited with the cementitious screed, we basically reduced the thickness of it and created a square rebate around the existing drainage outlet.

Things to consider when designing your sumps:

• Localized reduction of R value (when working with warm roof assemblies)
• Size of the sumps should be appropriate for the type of membrane used,
• Ensure that the drainage outlet you are connecting to is compatible with the membrane system you are using.
